No Trans Fats!

Here’s what’s going up in the United States year after year; cancer and obesity. With all our technology, great diets and exercise programs, cancer research, all the new fads relating to low calorie commercial foods etc, why are these dangerous diseases things still on the rise?

Food.

More specifically, processed food.

Along with sugar, trans fats are the worst substances we are consuming. They are found in virtually all restaurant and commercially sold foods in the supermarket. They have been proven over and over to be very dangerous to our health. The food companies are still allowed by the FDA to say a product contains zero trans fats if it actually has 0.5% or less.

Even though 0.5% is a small amount, it adds up to dangerous numbers when multiple products are consumed. The sad fact is most of the food we buy has a much higher trans fat number on the label but some people are still very ignorant about the dangers of it.

What are the dangers of trans fats?

Trans fats are a derivative of oil that has been hydrogenated. These are also used as industrial oils which also contain a by-product from gasoline!

Remember hearing how bad saturated fats were for you, risking heart disease and other health problems? Well, trans fats are much worse.

When food is cooked in hydrogenated oils, our body gets these trans fats which harden our arteries, add fat to our blood, clog the liver and colon, raise bad cholesterol levels and reduce the good cholesterol levels, increase the chance of heart attack and stroke.

Why do food companies still use it?

Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils don’t spoil as easily as non-hydrogenated fats, so they can be heated over and over without breaking down. This makes it cheaper to use, and allows foods to last much longer while sitting on the store shelf. It’s all about the money and not our health, that’s for sure.

What to do about it

Anyone who is truly concerned about not developing any of these health risks should start eliminating as many of these highly processed foods as possible. as you do, start replacing them with more natural, unprocessed foods.
